More and more people are working remotely from home. This is getting to be the norm given that the world is changing in recent times. Remote working is not necessarily a bad thing ! It has it’s own advantages and disadvantages too .
People working from home should keep a few things in mind so that they can maintain their mental and emotional wellness.
First thing to understand is that remote working is not the same as isolation. It has it’s own benefits. Remote working can be a time efficient way to work. Employees especially can save time and resources on travel and commute. It may protect an employee from bullying and the same office problems which may be at increased risk when there is more face to face interaction. Working from home can lead to lean and streamlined working leading to increased productivity and flexibility. Working from home can hence lead to reduced stress due to saving time, expenses, more flexibility and less office politics.
On the downside, we have to emphasize that human beings are social beings. It may be more of an effort for an employee to get the social life and may have to spend additional time to socialize. When someone works over a long period at home, the employer may not have the same access to monitor their mental health and pick out any early signs of mental illness such as underperformance, neglect of personal self care, not interacting with colleagues and so forth. Scattered working hours and lack of routine may be a cause of stress. Not being able to be up and about may lead to back pain of physical health issues.
Employees who work from home can maintain their mental and emotional wellness by sticking to a routine. Having a space for office work at home and spending other times with family and friends will help. Working in time chunks and energy chunks to take regular breaks for exercise and mindfulness is vital.
Not neglecting social life and developing hobbies as a part of relaxation and leisure are all helpful in wellness.
Being mindful of cyber bullying and knowing where to access support and help becomes an important step.
Remote working can be a boon if managed well.
